Woke actress Chelsea Handler recently insisted that she has faced backlash from straight men because they are “threatened” by her during an appearance on a podcast. Handler has faced criticism in recent years for being overtly left-leaning in her comedy, particularly as she has glorified being a middle-aged childless woman.
The 49-year-old comedian made the remarks about the apparent “threat” she poses to straight men during a conversation with Kelly Ripa on the “Let’s Talk Off Camera” podcast. The two spoke about Handler’s decision not to have children, where she has faced backlash for her crass methods of glorifying the life choice.
“I just have this sense of freedom in my life that I don’t feel enough women celebrate,” Handler said on the podcast. The comedian further claimed that she was fueled by men who pointed out that anti-natalist sentiment is a bad message to push on women throughout society. “So when I started celebrating it and getting the feedback from so many women who feel the same way, and then the feedback from all these idiot men saying I’m not really happy and shame on me because I’m spreading terrible messaging to women, that just obviously gave me even more of a motivation to do it,” she added.
Handler then took a shot at men, claiming they lacked “self-confidence” for expressing disagreement with her life decisions, particularly as birth rates in the United States are declining, well below the rate of population maintenance. “I’m a threat to a lot of straight men who don’t have enough self-confidence,” she said. “You shouldn’t find it threatening, you should find it empowering that I’m spreading this message to other women; if you want to have a baby, for sure get one, but if you don’t want to have a baby that’s valid, too.
Handler continued to tout anti-family rhetoric, stating, “Your value is not dependent on whether or not you’re married and your value is not dependent on whether you procreate. I want to spread joy and positivity and I want women to feel valued. My purpose is to embolden and lift up women. I’m not here for men, that’s not my problem.”
For context, Handler generated controversy in a 2023 post on social media, which outlined the “Day in the Life of a Childless Woman.” In the clip, Handler explained her morning routine, stating, “I wake up at 6 AM. I remember that I have no kids to take to school, so I take an edible, masturbate, and go back to sleep.” She added, “get ready for a busy day of doing whatever the f*** I feel like.”
“I put on my most impractical and stylish shoes since I won’t be chasing a child around the grocery store,” Handler further described her day, saying “fave spot in Paris to grab a croissant” where she is able to enjoy flights because she has “no screaming kids.” After the video went viral, it garnered a lot of criticism over the message it was sending to other women. However, despite the video being a joke in nature, many concluded that it was a sad and perhaps a coping mechanism.
